It is therefore possible to provide the vehicles piers for a sum of $640,000 only above the expenditure already necessary. This expenditure would result further in the release of two pier sites on the Hong Kong side, of which the Government would be free to dispose, and of one inside the Yaumati breakwater which is now in sufficiently good condition to be used as a public pier for launches and small craft. It is of interest to note that private piers on

the Hong Kong front no more favourably situated than those in use for the Shamshuipo and Hunghom services have recently changed hands at four lakhs of dollars, the pier structure being valued at one lakh at the most. I have no reason to doubt that the ferries, whether conducted by Government or leased to commercial companies will produce ample revenue to pay interest and sinking fund on the capital expenditure, and it would appear to be false economy not to proceed at once with the larger scheme.
